How this site handles your data
Relocating to Mauritius is a free guide for people planning a move to the island. It is run by Rory Phillips, who is responsible for the personal data described on this page (in data protection terms, the controller). This page sets out what is collected, who handles it and how to have it deleted.
The short version. This site runs no analytics, advertising or session-recording tools and sets no tracking cookies, which is why you see no cookie banner. If you ask for the free checklist, we keep your email address so we can send it, plus the occasional update. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
When you read the site
- No analytics or tracking. There is no Google Analytics, no Microsoft Clarity and no advertising pixel on any page.
- Hosting. Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it receives your IP address and browser details to deliver each page, and keeps short security logs to protect the site from attacks.
- Fonts. Pages load their typefaces from Google Fonts, so Google receives your IP address and browser details when a page loads.
- The tools. The visa checker, cost calculator and area quiz work out their results in your browser. Your answers are not sent to us or saved anywhere.
If you ask for the checklist
| What | What it is for | Who holds it, and for how long |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address, and the page you signed up on | Sends the move checklist you asked for, then a short note when a rule change matters to people planning a move, never more than once a month. The page name tells us which guides lead readers to sign up. If you sign up on a tool page, we note the tool, never your answers. | Our database, hosted by Cloudflare. Emails go out through MailerSend. Update emails will go out through MailerLite, which will then hold a copy of your address. Kept until you unsubscribe. |
| Your first name and where you are moving from, only if you add them on the thank-you screen | Lets an email greet you by name and focus on the rules that apply to where you are coming from. | The same database. Your first name will also be held by MailerLite once update emails start. Both are deleted when you unsubscribe. |
| Your IP address, when you press the sign-up button | Limits sign-ups to five an hour from one connection, to stop automated abuse of the form. | A counter in the same database, kept separately from your email address. |
When you unsubscribe, we delete your first name and where you are moving from, ask MailerLite to erase its copy, and keep only your email address and the basic sign-up record so that we never email you again. We use your details only for the emails described here, and we never sell or rent the list.
What is stored in your browser
One small item, and only if you sign up. Once you have answered or skipped the question about where you are moving from, your browser keeps a note (ec_seg, in local storage) so the question is not asked again. It holds “1” or “skipped”, never your answer. It is not a cookie, it is never sent to us, and clearing this site’s data in your browser removes it.
Legal basis
We email you only because you asked us to, so the legal basis is your consent under the UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. You can withdraw it at any time through the unsubscribe link in every email. The hosting and font requests described above are needed to deliver the site, and rest on our legitimate interest in running it securely.
Where the Mauritius Data Protection Act 2017 applies, we follow the same principles: we collect only what each purpose needs, say what it is for, and stop when you ask.
International transfers
Cloudflare, Google, MailerSend and MailerLite may process your data outside the UK and Mauritius. Each does so under data processing terms that include safeguards for international transfers, such as standard contractual clauses.
If this changes
If we ever add analytics, we will update this page first, and any analytics cookies would be set only after you press Accept on a banner. The date at the top shows when this page last changed.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email hello@relocatingtomauritius.com and expect a reply within 30 days.
If you are unhappy with the reply, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk, or in Mauritius to the Data Protection Office.
What this site is not
The guides here are general information about moving to Mauritius. They are not immigration, tax, legal or financial advice, and reading them creates no client relationship. Take professional advice on your own circumstances before you act.
