Where to Live in Mauritius: Area Quiz
The area quiz matches what you want from daily life to 16 areas of Mauritius, then shows the evidence for each match: free-flow drive times, schools within about 20 minutes, typical asking rents and local climate figures. It names the closest match and two runners-up, and it leaves the choice to you. Drive times come from OpenStreetMap routing and rents from online property listings read on 28 October 2026.
Answer five or six questions
It takes about a minute, and your answers stay in your browser. A question left on no preference is left out of the matching, except that Any curriculum still counts schools of every curriculum.

Drive times, including the minutes to each school, are free-flow OpenStreetMap routing with no traffic, so peak times will be longer. Rents are asking rents in online property listings, read 28 October 2026. Neighbouring areas share a figure where the listings covered them together, such as Grand Baie and Pereybère. Rents marked indicative only come from five or fewer listings, and a home type with too few listings shows a count only, with no rent.

Frequently asked questions
How does the quiz pick the three areas?
Each area is scored from 0 to 1 on every question where you gave a preference, and the scores are averaged. Schools and the drive to where you need to get to carry a weight of 30 each, and rent, climate and setting a weight of 20 each. A question left on no preference is left out, except that a family that chooses Any curriculum still has schools counted, with every curriculum included. Areas on the same score are listed with the shorter combined free-flow drive to Port Louis and the airport first, then by name.
Why does the quiz not name a winner?
Which area suits you depends on things a quiz cannot see, such as where you will work, how you spend a weekend and how you feel about a long drive. The quiz sticks to facts that can be measured, which are drive times, schools, asking rents and climate. Visit the areas on your shortlist before you sign a lease.
Where do the rents, drive times and climate figures come from?
Rents are asking rents in online property listings, read on 28 October 2026. Drive times, to schools as well as to Port Louis centre and the airport, are OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) from a point in each area, free-flow with no traffic. Climate figures are 1971 to 2000 averages from the Mauritius Meteorological Services, for the weather station in each region. Schools and their curricula come from the schools themselves, on their own websites. Place descriptions come from Wikipedia, or from OpenStreetMap where Wikipedia has no page.
What does it mean when the quiz finds no listings for an area?
It means we found no long-let listings for that type of home in the area, or too few to give a typical figure. The quiz then treats rent as unknown for that area and scores it in the middle, not as a miss. Figures marked indicative only come from five or fewer listings and count for less in the score, so check them against current listings before you plan around them.

Drive times, climate figures and school details come from the pages listed here. Rents come from online property listings that we read and counted ourselves, so they have no page to link to.
- Climate of Mauritius (Mauritius Meteorological Services) and its regional climate tables for the North, West, Centre, East and South: average temperatures, monthly rainfall and sunshine, 1971 to 2000. Yearly rainfall is our sum of the published monthly averages. The Services publish no region boundaries, so placing an area in a region is our reading.
- Project OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors: free-flow drive times from a map point in each area to Port Louis centre and the airport terminal, with no traffic.

- Online property listings: asking rents and listing counts for long lets, read on 28 October 2026. Asking rents are advertised prices, not agreed rents, some listings are out of date, and the same property can appear more than once.
